Shop Small Gift Guide 2018

November 24, 2018 by Erika

Good golly, how in the world is November almost over?!  I still have things about the Bent Arrow Challenge I want to write about!  Ugh!  Oh well, since time has decided that it will continue on whether I'm behind or not, I guess I need to just roll with it.

As you know, I'm super passionate about local and small businesses.  I truly believe that we as Christians have a responsibility to shop small and local whenever we can.  By buying from "the little guy" we help someone live out what their God-given passions are and we get to build community.  When the small shop owner isn't worried about how in the world she's going to feed her family, she's going to be a lot more open to joining you Sunday morning instead of putting in extra hours just to make ends meet.

That being said, for Small Business Saturday, I wanted to share some of my favorite small and local shops.

Stitch & Timber

Stitch & Timber is owned by my college BF, Malia.  When I asked her to share about her business she said, "I have always loved cross stitching and wanted to share my work...I decided to see if any would sell.  Low and behold they do, slowly but surely!"  Malia creates modern finished cross stitch and paper goods for today's home.  I have several of her pieces, including a custom made "Green is the New Black" reusable produce bag (check my IG to see it).

You can find Malia's work on Instagram here and her shop on Etsy here.  Use code FULLSIMP10 at checkout for 10% off orders of $15 or more!

The Mustard Seed Marketplace

This is a relatively new shop to me, but I fell in love with it immediately!  The Mustard Seed Marketplace partners with over 30 artisan groups in 18 countries to create a marketplace for artisans locally + globally!  They carry a curated collection of Fair Trade + Locally Made + Give Back Brands.  And they have something for just about everyone on your list stocking items like jewelry, apparel, home décor, accessories and more!

My kind of shop!  And it is located in northern Indiana!

You can shop The Mustard Seed Marketplace here and follow them over on Instagram here.  You can use the code SHOPSMALL for 10% through 12/31!

I asked for the black Slub Tee for Christmas...so fingers crossed it shows up under the tree!

Freckled Hen Farmhouse

Y'all know I love Freckled Hen Farmhouse!  I cannot get enough of their cute, yet practical farmhouse décor!  Natalie is also awesome to follow over on Instagram.

You can find the Freckled Hen Farmhouse over on Instagram here or on their website here.

Chalk Full of Design

Another small business that I love is Chalk Full of Design.  Last year I got the kids chalkboards from here as their "something to read" gift instead of books and they love them.  We also have the games pack that we keep in the van to pull out any time we are going somewhere with a long wait time instead of always shoving tablets or phones in front of them (which we do still do occasionally).  This year I got Kate her own personalized board so that she could have one like her big brother and sister.

If you need a laugh, follow Lindsay on Instagram here and watch her stories.  I love her!  You can shop her site here and she's currently running a sale of 15% off with code CFDHOLIDAY2018 until Monday!

Aleks Handmade

The last shop I'm going to share with you is another Indiana shop.  Aleks Handmade makes handmade dolls...even custom orders!  We have three dolls from Aleks and I cannot say enough about the quality.  They are soft and no little plastic pieces to worry about coming off.  Plus, they give back in a BIG way!  With their Dolls for Smiles program, they donate one doll for every doll purchased to the orphanage they are working with that quarter.  You have to go see the video of these children playing with dolls that look like them!  It is amazing.

You can shop Aleks Handmade here and follow them on Instagram here.

In full disclosure, I shopped Amazon too this year.  I get it.  But if everyone took the time and money to buy one or two gifts this season from a small or local business, think about what that could do for our communities!  Spending a little more for a gift that is handmade and/or fairly made is even better.  Make 2018 the year you buy less but better gifts for under your tree.

Merry Christmas!

How to Make a Gift Basket for a Homesteader

December 1, 2017 by Erika

It's officially December and the Christmas season is upon us.  I really do love Christmas and giving and getting gifts.  But as I've tried to embrace simplicity of heart and home these past few years, my gift-giving and wishes have changed a bit.  I want to give and get more intentional presents that are well-made and practical.  So I thought I would share with you all how to make a gift basket for the homesteader, gardener, farmer or even zero-waster in your life.

Full and Simple How to Make a Gift Basket

1. Basket

The first thing you need is a basket.  I personally love shopping at thrift stores for little baskets.  You can find them pretty cheap.  The one I have here was 99 cents!  Plus, I love the idea of reusing an item so that it isn't thrown away.

2. Glass jars

I love glass jars!  And while I know many low-waste families like them because they're better for the environment than plastic, my reasoning is a bit more selfish....They're dishwasher safe!!!  Ain't nobody got time to handwash a bunch of plastic containers. LOL!  I personally love Weck brand jars.  They are beautiful and functional.

3. Wine Glass Writers

If you are someone that makes a lot of your own foods or cleaners and then puts them in those beautiful glass jars, you need labeling to know what and when you made whatever it is in those jars.  I LOVE Wine Glass Writers for this for several reasons.  I can change labels on jars whenever I change the contents.  No need to make new plastic or sticker labels.  I can easily wipe off the label from the old contents with a warm wet towel.  Wine Glass Writers are the only certified non-toxic wine glass writers on the market today, so they're safe to use around food.  AND they pay the people making their product a living wage and make sure they are provided safe working conditions.  You know that this is near and dear to my heart!

3. Bees Wraps

Most homesteaders try to be low-waste in general, so giving products that help them live low-waste is always welcomed.  Not to mention that you are helping them relieve a financial burden as many reusable products are pricier upfront to purchase than their disposable counterparts.  We love Bees Wraps and have been using our first pack for over a year!

4. Beeswax Candles

With all of the talk of Hygge, I think that candles have become even more of a must for the winter.  I've always been a "flowers in the spring/summer and candles in the fall/winter" kind of gal anyway, but I didn't really pay attention to what is in my candles until recently.  True beeswax candles are all natural and non-toxic, which means they emit little smoke.  And not only do they not add to pollutants in the air, but they actually purify the air as they burn!  Try to find a local beekeeper or candle maker to truly make an impact.  I also love Honey+Fern on Etsy.  She is pretty local to us, and I love that all of her wax comes from beekeepers local to her.

4. Cloth Napkins

Again, homesteaders generally like to live low-waste.  We have switched to cloth napkins most of the time.  However, I'll admit that there are days we still use paper towels because life happened and we didn't get the napkins washed.  I don't have just a ton either since they are more expensive to buy at first then a roll of paper towel.  And if you think that cloth napkins are something that you intended receiver would like, think about un-paper towels or some other reusable item.  Even wooden dish brushes would be nice.

5. Something from You

You may be thinking, "This whole basket is from me!"  But what I mean is, add something you grew or made yourself.  I'm so proud of our garlic harvest this year that I am adding heads of garlic to many presents.  And we plan to make homemade cocoa mixes and marshmallows for some people on our lists.  I think this just adds an extra special touch.

6. Make it Pretty

Once you have all of your items, add some filler to the basket.  I like this natural filler since it is made with recycled paper in the U.S. and can be added to compost or reused by the receiver.

Arrange your items so that they all are seen.

Last, add a pretty bow and name tag.

You're done!  And now you have a gift that the receiver knows you put thought and love into.  Plus, you've given them something that won't sit and collect dust.  You've given a purposeful and intentional gift.

And TODAY only (December 1, 2017) you can enter to win Wine Glass Writers for yourself and to add to a gift basket.  Simply head over to my Instagram account to find out more!

Hand-Picked Peach: Fancy Faye Handmade

December 9, 2016 by Erika

Hand-Picked Peach Post Header Web

Do you all remember Fancy Faye Handmade from last year?  Well, I sure haven't forgotten about my Instagram friend's shop.  I absolutely adore her work, so I wanted to share it with you again this year!

Elyse and I became friends on Instagram a little over a year ago, and she is such a role model for me on this journey to simpler living.  One thing I believe that simplicity calls for is quality and handmade items where possible.  Buying from small businesses helps out our friends and neighbors, but also gives us the joy of unique, quality gifts and pleasures.

Ignore the graininess of my iPhone pic!

Ignore the graininess of my iPhone pic!

Elyse sells handmade felt items in her shop, Fancy Faye Handmade, on Etsy.  I had her make some custom bows to put in Lakota's stocking this year and we got a few more ornaments for our tree (which Lakota decorated all by herself this year!).  She even makes custom colors!  When I heard this I decided to have her make me some white barn ornaments for our other Christmas tree which is only decorated with neutral colors.

Lakota's favorite ornament from Fancy Faye Handmade is the gingerbread house, but mine is the little red barn.  And all of you vintage glampers NEED to get your hands on one of her campers!  She has so many cute styles to choose from!  Or maybe you could have a house made in your home's colors?

Elyse is offering all Full & Simple readers 20% off their order until December 16, which is the last day to order for Christmas delivery.  Simply use the code 20off.

Merry Christmas and happy shopping!

Gift Guide for the Fancy Farm Girl

December 4, 2016 by Erika

Merry Christmas!  I'm thrilled to be joining a few other ladies to bring you gift guides for every woman on your list.

As many of you know, I am a farm girl, but ironically, I don't particularly care for dirt and I love all things that make my farm chores cuter.  That is what inspired my gift guide this year.  I want to bring you items to help make the farmhouse and farm life a little cuter.

dsc_8965_sq_1024x1024

1. Freckled Hen Farmhouse Market Basket

This market basket has been on my wishlist for a little while now because while we try to grow a lot of our own food in our garden, we simply don't have the room (or time) to grow everything.  This means that we still make it a priority to visit our local farmers market in the summer.  This basket is perfect for all of the goodies we pick up on our trips.  And its beautiful enough to make a decor statement hanging up on our coat hook when it isn't being used.

Freckled Hen Farmhouse is giving Full & Simple readers a 15% discount to their shop.  Just use the code FANCYFARMGIRL at checkout.

Full & Simple Chicken Coop Reveal (7)

2. Bainbridge Mercantile Signs

I have two signs from Bainbridge Mercantile already and want a few more.  They have to cutest signs for any farm or garden.  We have a sign on our chicken coop and a sign for our bees on the gate right outside of where we keep our hive.  My plan this spring is to make a few raised beds and add a few of the garden signs to them.

Bainbridge Mercantile is giving 20% off and free shipping on orders over $25 (U.S. orders only) with the code FULLANDSIMPLE20!

3. Hunter Boots

All farm girls need rubber boots, BUT all fancy farm girls need some Hunter boots!  I love the fit and style of my Hunter boots.  I have a tan pair and a black pair.  We even buy a new red pair for my oldest each spring and then pass them down our younger child.  They are perfect for all of the garden and farm chores.

4. White Barn Mercantile Utility Apron

I have this canvas utility apron and I absolutely love it!  It makes planting the garden so much easier because the pockets hold all of my seed packets, markers, string, trowel, etc.  You will never go back to gardening without this apron once you get one!

5. Freckled Hen Farmhouse brushes

I'm back to Freckled Hen Farmhouse because really, everything in their store is so cute!  But I wanted to highlight two of their brushes that I love.  I have one of their wooden dish brushes that I only use for cleaning my eggs.  I like to have something designated for cleaning the eggs so that I don't end up with any cross contamination so to speak.  I also have and love their wooden vegetable brush.  It is perfect for scrubbing potatoes or other root veggies like carrots.

And don't forget that you can get 15% off with code FANCYFARMGIRL!

6. Lindsay Letters Farm to Table Canvas

I am IN LOVE with this canvas!!!  I have been pining over it for almost a year now.  I just can't seem to pull the trigger on buying it until we have a farmhouse table built.  You can also purchase this design as a print if you prefer that over a large canvas.

7. Painted Fox Home Tilly Triplet baskets

Every crazy chicken lady needs a cute basket for gathering eggs.  But these baskets would even be good for gathering veggies in the garden.  Cute accessories like this make going out for eggs in a little more fun.

il_570xn-1080316587_f484

8. Boxwood Avenue Egg Stamp

Another cute addition to any egg gather's day would be an egg stamp from Boxwood Avenue.  I am still getting the hang of using mine, but I love giving eggs to friends and family with all of the eggs stamped.  The stamp just adds a bit of whimsy.  I can't wait to see the reaction at the farmers market next summer!

Boxwood Avenue is giving all Full & Simple readers 10% off  their order with the code FULLANDSIMPLE.

9. Substation Paperie Canning Label Stamp

I always make cute labels for my canned items from the garden.  Again, it just makes doing the chore a bit more fun when you see all of your jars prettily labeled.  I found Substation Paperie after canning season this year, but you can be sure that I will be getting a stamp before next year's harvest!  I love their honey stamps too!

Free Mrs. Meyer’s & Bubble Up

November 16, 2016 by Erika

postimage1_v2offer

There's no denying that the holiday season is upon us.  My Instagram feed is already full of Christmas trees.  Family is trying to pin down days when everyone can make it to celebrate.  We're wondering where in the world we'll be able to fit any more toys, and I'm stressing about the holiday budget!

Sound like you?

What if I told you that I have a really great offer to help with that budget issue and to help you get into the holiday spirit too?  Would you be in?

GREAT!

Last month I told you how I have started to use the sense of smell to help transform the mood in our home from season to season instead of over-decorating (Although I do still love to decorate quite a bit for Christmas.), which is one of many reasons that I love Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day products.  I can change the scent of my cleaning products, which I have to buy anyway, with the seasons to help make cleaning a little more enjoyable.

That's why I'm so excited to be able to offer Full & Simple readers another chance to join The Grove Collaborative and earn free goodies including the new holiday scented products from Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day!

holiday-2016-continued-778-1

Every new Grove Collaborative customer gets all of the following with an order $20+:

  • Free Mrs. Meyer's Holiday hand soap
  • Free Mrs. Meyer's Holiday dish soap
  • Free Mrs. Meyer's Holiday Multi-Surface Spray
  • Free Grove Collaborative bubble up
  • Free shipping & VIP trial

That's over $35 FREE!

Already a Grove Collaborative customer?  No problem!  You can grab the new Grove Collaborative bubble up for 50% off!  This little thing is so cool and super cute!

Want some other product suggestions? Some of my other favorite products include the Grove Collaborative Glass Spray Bottle (pretty and functional for misting house plants), Mrs. Meyers Dishwasher Tabs, and the Mrs. Meyers Vinegar Gel Cleaner (this stuff works wonders on calcium build up!).  Those three items come to a total of $21.25 and with Grove's special pricing, you save $5.48 off of other stores!  Win-win!

You have to buy cleaning products anyway, so why not get a few things that make cleaning up for holiday guests a little more enjoyable?  You can take advantage of the this offer by clicking below.

Merry Christmas!

Hand-Picked Peach: Week 21

December 25, 2015 by Erika

Hand-Picked Peach Post Header Web

Merry Christmas!!!  I know I’m late to the game but I just started hearing about Penatonix recently.  They are an incredibly talented a cappella group from Texas.  I wanted to share with you their version of “Mary Did You Know.”

This song has always been a favorite of mine, but now that I’m a momma, it takes on a whole new meaning.  Do you think Mary knew how her son would die?  Do you think that she could endure that reality while being pregnant and raising him?  She was already courageous; risking shame and humiliation by accepting God’s son into her womb while not being married, but to know that she might have to withstand that AND watch this baby endure his own humiliation and then crucifixion…I don’t know.  I never appreciated the gift of God’s son, Jesus, the way I do now that I’m a mother.  I would never be able to give life to a child with the full knowledge that his only purpose was to die…to save us, all of us no matter how undeserving we are. I pray, on this day that we celebrate the Savior, that you have accepted this outrageous gift.

The Penatonix version of this song gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes.  Have a wonderful Christmas day and remember the real reason we celebrate.

Hand-Picked Peach: Week 20

December 18, 2015 by Erika

You're a Peach

Christmas is only a week away!  Since most of you probably already have your presents bought (if you haven't then you're running out of time for shipping!), I thought that I would take this week to share with you a tradition of sorts that we have started.

I love Christmas movies, especially the classics.  I bought a few one year and have started to add one Christmas movie to our collection every year since.  Honestly, its hard for me to only pick one!  There are still so many Christmas movies that I want, but I don't want to blow my Christmas budget on movies.

These movies are kept with our Christmas decor just like our Christmas books so it is always exciting to pull them out since it is like a special treat.

Here is a list of the movies that we have in our Christmas collection:

  • It's a Wonderful Life
  • Holiday Inn
  • White Christmas
  • Arthur Christmas
  • Mickey's Christmas Carol
  • Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas

What about you?  What is your favorite Christmas movie?  Do you have any fun traditions you share with your family?

Hand-Picked Peach: Week 19

December 11, 2015 by Erika

Hand-Picked Peach Post Header Web

First, I need to tell you that the number 19 is my favorite.  It was my softball number from Kindergarten through my senior year.  I even made sure I got married on the 19th!  So on this 19th week, I'm so excited to bring you the work of Elyse at Fancy Faye on Etsy.

Elyse makes the cutest felt ornaments and little girls' hair bows and headbands.  I ordered the camper ornament with a tiny little wreath and a house with Christmas lights for our playroom tree.  Her attention to detail on these is AMAZING!  Since I ordered mine, she has added sparkle campers and gingerbread houses to her ornament line.  Both of which I may have to order as well!

Elyse and I met over on Instagram.  I love her farmhouse. It is simple, but in the best way.  Her feed is calming.   There isn't a lot of clutter and you feel like she must absolutely live with intention, which is my goal coming up in 2016. Plus, she is so kind!  Which is why she is offering 20% off to my readers if you use the code Blog20, but hurry!  All orders must be placed by December 18 (standard first class) to receive your ornaments by Christmas.  These ornaments could even make cute gift tags!

Make sure you check out Fancy Faye and Elyse on Instagram.  You can thank me later. (Wink!)

Christmas 2015 Home Tour

December 7, 2015 by Erika

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (1)

Welcome to my first EVER Christmas home tour.  I absolutely LOVE decorating for Christmas.  It is my favorite holiday.  I love to buy presents for everyone, decorate and eat all of the yummy food!

A few things before I take you on the tour, I now understand why bloggers decorate before Thanksgiving.  I don't know if I ever will, but I wanted the tour posted in enough time to still inspire your own home decor, but I had a few things missing that I wanted to have done...like J's stocking. His isn't embroidered with his name yet in these photos.  (Please don't think I'm just making him have a blank stocking.  It is off being embroidered as I write this.)

Another thing to know about me is that due to our budget, I don't do a complete overhaul of my Christmas decor every year.  I do make minor changes and have space in our Christmas budget each year for additions, but my Christmas decor is a process.  Now, you may not notice this about me this year since it is my first tour, but you might next year....

Okay, let's get started!

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (2)

This may have become my favorite spot in the whole house.  I bought that wingback at a yard sale for $20 and had it reupholstered.  The poinsettia pillow was a lucky purchase.  I saw it at TJ Maxx a few weeks before, but I didn't get it.  But then I just kept thinking about it, so I finally went back to get it and I didn't see it anywhere.  Ugh!  But then....there she was!  In a display away from the other pillows where I saw her before...the only one.  I practically ran to her (while dragging my poor little L by the hand).  I made the tree skirt three years ago using this tutorial.

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (3)

I got my pouf (which is showing up on Instagram everywhere now!) at Target and it has the perfect little pocket for my Naptime Diaries Advent Devotional (Use this referral link and get 15% off your order!).

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (4)

I had always wanted the Willow Tree Nativity Set, but I'm so glad that last year I bought the Melissa & Doug one instead.  L loves to play with it and J just learned to pull himself up last week so he can even play with it.  L will bring me the pieces and ask me who they are, which gives me a great opportunity to tell her the story of Christ's birth.

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (5)

I found the this star at Michael's Craft Store and loved it.  Then I found the "They followed the star" sign at Hobby Lobby, so I decided to try to go with a star theme of sorts this year.

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (6)

I couldn't believe my luck when I saw the star crown at a local antique/craft fair.  It's made out of old fencing.  Before, I had a bow on top of the tree, but I saw the crown and immediately knew I had to have it for my tree.  The red lantern was a yard sale find this past summer.  I actually bought a pair thinking that I would place one on either end of the mantel, but then things evolved.  I'm not sure if I will keep both yet or not since I only used the one this year.

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (7)

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (8)

Our stockings are from Pottery Barn and my chubby snowman is from a little shop in Nashville, Indiana.

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (9)

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (12)

I found this white basket at the same antique/craft show that I found the star crown at.  All I did here was put in some burlap runner that I found and Walmart and then I placed a centerpiece that I already had down in it.  I was actually going to sell the centerpiece because the base is silver and just didn't fit in my rustic scheme, but this worked great!

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (13)

The coffee bar even got a little attention.  If you read the post where I reveal the coffee bar, you'll notice that I did go ahead and add a "coffee and Jesus" print and i'm so glad I did.  I love it!  You can find my tiered tray at Painted Fox Treasures.

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (11)

I just couldn't get a great shot of my Noel banner.  It was too bright.  I made it using cream bunting from the Target Dollar Spot.  Then I used Santa's Sleigh font and made my own stencils with card stock and an exacto knife.  The boxwood wreath is also from Target.

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (15)

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (10)

I found these adorable clothespins at the Target Dollar Spot and bought them without really know what I'd do with them, but then I realized that I never have a place to display my Christmas cards.  I just used some 3M hooks and string to put this up.

Full & Simple Christmas Home Tour 2015 (14)

Our final stop on the tour is my front door.  I made this wreath last year after seeing this one on Pinterest.  I wish that I had spray painted the styrofoam that I used, but I still get a lot of compliments.  Maybe I'll make another sometime and I'll know better then!

Well, I hope you enjoyed the tour and that you have a few ideas for how to bring in the Christmas spirit in your own home.

Hand-Picked Peach: Week 18

December 4, 2015 by Erika

Hand-Picked Peach Post Header Web

Continuing with my Christmas themed peaches this month, I wanted to bring you the talented work of my blogging friend Katie.

Katie and I "met" online (I think Facebook?), and have become fast friends.  She is incredibly talented and has a blog, website design business and an Etsy print business!

We are lucky to have Katie giving this printable away to all of my readers!  To thank Katie, why don't you head over to her Etsy shop where she is having an incredible sale.  All of her prints are only $1!!!  Hurry, this sale is only good until 12/31/15!
