Rad Women Worldwide

February 24, 2017 by Erika

Tired of Today's "Role Models"

Having a daughter in today's world, I feel a responsibility to surround her with worthy role models.  I don't want Miley Cyrus and the Kardashians to be the types of women that she aspires to be. I wanted to read through Rad Women Worldwide to be able to share these women's stories with my daughter someday.

Sadly, most of the women talked about in Rad Women Worldwide were women I had never heard of before I read this book.  However, now there are many strong women that I am interested in learning more about.  Women like...

Real Rad Women

Malala Yousafzai was only 11 when she started writing for BBC about what it was like to live in Pakistan under extremist rule.  When she was 14, she was shot in the head by a Taliban assassin, but she was not killed. At the age of 17 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to advocate for the education of young girls.  She wrote the best-selling book, I am Malala, and a documentary titled He Named Me Malala is available on Hulu if you are interested in learning more about her.

Wangari Maathai grew up in Kenya, but realized in the 1970s that the Kenya of her childhood was disappearing.  Poverty, unemployment and malnutrition were becoming more prevalent. Forests were being destroyed to make way for crop land.  Wangari took action.  She started the Green Belt Movement, which taught women how to plant tree seeds and nurture the saplings.  This provided income for women in Kenya and helped to clean up the environment and water.  In 2004, Wangari became the first environmentalist and African woman to receive the Nobel Peace prize.

About the Book

To find other amazing women like these, you don't have to look any further than Rad Women Worldwide.  With stories of 40 different women from all over the globe (plus a list of names and locations of 250 more), you are sure to find worthy role models for your daughters and yourself.

This book is one that I will absolutely keep and share with my daughter as she grows up.  It's easy today to feel hopeless and like there is nothing we can do to help, but as the author said, "When the forces of evil seemed to dominate the events of the world, these accounts reminded me that women have overcome, fought back, led, created, invented, achieved, and succeeded."

Hand-Picked Peach: The Light Between Oceans

September 2, 2016 by Erika

Hand-Picked Peach Post Header Web

Last month my book club read The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman.  This book may be one of the most conflicting books I've read and let me tell you why.

First, let me give you a short synopsis.  Tom and Isabel live on a small island off the coast of Australia where Tom is the lighthouse keeper.  It's just the two of them...until one day, a boat washes up on shore.  Inside are a dead man and an infant that is alive.  Isabel convinces Tom to not report the boat to the mainland and to keep the baby as their own.  Isabel's reasoning is that the mother must have fallen overboard and that, if reported, the baby would be sent to an orphanage.  A few years after the baby arrives Tom, Isabel and Lucy (the baby) go back to the mainland for their leave.  This is when Tom and Isabel find out that Lucy's mother did not drown and has been searching for her baby all this time.  What follows is complicated and emotionally conflicting.

The Light Between Oceans

I think this book is quite the conversation piece, especially for mothers.  Because on one hand, you have the birth mother who you feel for.  I can't imagine losing one of my children.  And in real life, if this were a story on the six o'clock news, I would root for her.  But in the book, with an omniscient narrator, you find yourself caring for and rooting for Tom and Isabel as well.  I don't know how you resolve the story without heartbreak, but that didn't stop our group from trying to come up with ways!

Also, the movie for the book released today.  I can't wait to go see it with my book club girls.  So if you are looking for a thought-provoking book or movie, make sure to check out The Light Between Oceans.

Hand-Picked Peach: Kung-Fu Panda 3

July 22, 2016 by Erika

This week we rented Kung-Fu Panda 3 from Redbox.  L and I had gone on a momma-daughter date to see the movie in theaters, but I figured the boys would love it too.   The banter is just as funny as the previous Kung-Fu Panda movies, but what I really love about this installment of the trilogy is the message.

Get ready....I'm about to get really deep with a cartoon.

In the very last fight scene, Kai (the bad guy) asks Po, "Who are you?"

To which Po responds, "I've been asking the same question.  Am I the son of a panda?  The son of a goose?  A student?  A teacher?  Turns out, I'm all of them.  I am the Dragon Warrior."

Ok, you probably think that I'm off my rocker, but bare with me.

Po's response is EXACTLY what I want to share with women and the world here on Full & Simple.

Am I a mother?  A wife?  A blogger?  A gardener?  A beekeeper?  A home decor lover?  I am all of those!  I am a daughter of Christ created to be unique and to share that with the world, and you are too!

I highly recommend that you watch this movie with your kiddos and teach them to embrace all of their loves.  Teach them to ignore the world's idea that we have to be only one thing...unless that one thing is to be wholly themselves.

Hand-Picked Peach: Week 34

March 25, 2016 by Erika

One thing that I'm so thankful for is my library.  I didn't use the local library much while I was teaching and I only occasionally used the school's library.  But I have really started to take advantage of the benefits of FREE (okay, not really free since I pay taxes, but....) movies and books.  Our library is great and I can get just about any movie or book, even if my library doesn't have it, via inter-library loans.

This past week, I got to watch the movie The Intern starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro and it was fantastic.  I had heard about this movie a little while before, but since we rarely go to movies or rent, if it isn't on Netflix or at the library, I don't see it.  Luckily, my library was able to get it from another library so that I could watch it.

The movie is about an older man (De Niro) who is tired of retirement.  He has taken classes and traveled, but with his wife being deceased, he needs something to fill his days.  He stumbles upon a flyer for a fashion company seeking senior [citizen] interns.  Hathaway's character is the CEO of this start-up company.  She is closed off and overwhelmed by the stresses of running a hugely successful fashion start-up.  After a reluctant start, Hathaway's character finds friendship and wisdom from her senior intern.

The story line is so sweet and the set and wardrobe of the movie is fantastic!  This is a Nancy Meyers film.  You may know some of her other works like It's Complicated and Something's Gotta Give.

If you are looking for a film that leaves you with a smile on your face this weekend, I highly recommend watching The Intern.

Hand-Picked Peach: Week 20

December 18, 2015 by Erika

You're a Peach

Christmas is only a week away!  Since most of you probably already have your presents bought (if you haven't then you're running out of time for shipping!), I thought that I would take this week to share with you a tradition of sorts that we have started.

I love Christmas movies, especially the classics.  I bought a few one year and have started to add one Christmas movie to our collection every year since.  Honestly, its hard for me to only pick one!  There are still so many Christmas movies that I want, but I don't want to blow my Christmas budget on movies.

These movies are kept with our Christmas decor just like our Christmas books so it is always exciting to pull them out since it is like a special treat.

Here is a list of the movies that we have in our Christmas collection:

  • It's a Wonderful Life
  • Holiday Inn
  • White Christmas
  • Arthur Christmas
  • Mickey's Christmas Carol
  • Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas

What about you?  What is your favorite Christmas movie?  Do you have any fun traditions you share with your family?

Hand-Picked Peach: Week 2

August 14, 2015 by Erika

Hand-Picked Peach Post Header Web

This week’s peach is the movie Finding Normal.  I found this movie on Netflix and it is a few years old, but it really peeked my interest because it stars Candace Cameron Bure who is on fire right now with the release of her new book, Dancing Through Life, and with the upcoming release of the Netflix original series Fuller House.  Bure plays Dr. Lisa Leland who ends up having to spend time in the tiny town of Normal.  While she spends time in Normal she discovers things about herself that she had never realized before.

I really enjoyed this movie.  It is funny and romantic.  Because it is a Pure Flix film, you can rest easy in knowing the whole family can sit down to watch.  I loved that it starred Bure, a Hollywood star not afraid to talk about her faith.  And the final reason that I recommend this movie, a more minor point, is that nobody in Normal accepts credit cards (The other Dave Ramsey fans get it!).  I thought it was incredibly ironic that Dave always says, “Debt is normal, be weird.”  But debt isn’t Normal!  (See what I did there? Hehe!)

Make sure you add this movie to your queue!
